Have you ever felt really hopeful before an agility competition, only to have it all fall apart because your dog started too early at the startline?
As you’ve probably noticed, this common behavior isn’t likely to change on its own.
You’ve likely tried various methods already…
Perhaps you’ve even experienced some success with them, but just when you thought you had it all figured out, this persistent problem came back around… Am I right?
Don’t you despise it when the potential for success could crumble before you’ve even had a chance to begin?
It’s not a fun thing — watching your dog slowly inch forward until they’re uncomfortably close to the starting jump.
Or feeling scared about courses with open, straight lines at the beginning, questioning whether you can depend on your dog.
There’s no need to be embarrassed if you find yourself tip-toeing around your dog as they struggle to wait at the startline.
In fact, you’re far from alone in dealing with this issue…
My first dog also struggled with waiting at the start line. I always had to keep a close eye on her, hoping she wouldn’t break her stay before I could reach my starting point.
I faced this problem day in and day out. Arguing with my dog before almost every training, turning something we both loved into a battle of wills.
So, when the spotlight of a competition intensified the situation, that struggle only grew.
My mind was already crowded with information, and worrying about whether my dog would stay or not only added to my stress.
I could sense THE SAME FRUSTRATION resonating throughout the agility community.
It seemed like everyone had a story to share about their dogs bursting with energy, only to break that crucial stay, shattering their dreams of a clean run.
Facing this seemingly hopeless scenario is also common during training sessions.
So, when the SPOTLIGHT OF COMPETITION only INTENSIFIES the situation, that frustration can really HIT HARD!
Picture this high-pressure moment:
Adrenaline pumping, heart racing, people cheering loudly, dogs barking … The atmosphere is charged with excitement, and the dogs are filled with anticipation. And then, just as the race begins, your dog darts forward, shattering your hopes of a clean run before you’ve even begun.
I understand the anxious feeling you get when you and your dog are not on the same page.
While some dogs may handle the excitement of an agility competition well, most find it challenging to stick to the criteria in the face of the noise, barking and excitement (especially if your foundations are weak). Competitions show us how sturdy the behaviour is.
So if your dog has a perfect stay on your training but it falls apart on competitions, you’ve come to the right place.
It’s simple.
If you don’t have a reliable startline stay, it is most likely because you either didn’t dedicate enough time to building solid foundations or your dog’s emotional state is in the way.
THE OLD WAY:
It’s common to see people repeatedly using the “stay” command (“Stay!!! Staaaaay!” NO! STaAaaAy!”), almost sounding like they’re threatening their dogs to stay in place.
I’ve got news for you: it doesn’t help! 🙂
In fact, it tends to raise frustration and puts your dog under pressure.
Traditionally, the stay behavior is taught as a separate command (“Stay!”), with the expectation that the dog remains completely still in a specific position.
Any behavior that hasn’t been thoroughly trained, practiced in various situations with distractions, and consistently reinforced is likely to fail when faced with stress or emotional changes.
THE NEW WAY:
The secret solution lies in building strong foundations and helping your dog channel their big emotion into focus and control.
Moreover…
“Stay” IS NOT treated as an isolated behavior and doesn’t require a separate command.
Instead, “stay” is viewed as a behavior with a clear start and finish.
Therefore, we won’t be using a distinct “stay” command in our training. Instead, we’ll concentrate on extending the duration of the desired position, whether it’s sitting or lying down.
By having a starting cue (“sit/lie-down”) and a release cue, you eliminate the need to repeat the “stay” command over and over again.
Isn’t that great?
As I delved deeper into this newfound knowledge and began sharing it with other dog owners and fellow agility enthusiasts, the transformations were astounding.
Restless dogs were transformed into focused athletes, and their handlers rediscovered a sense of confidence and trust.
With our program, you can achieve the same results in just a couple of weeks, practicing for less than 5 minutes a day!
We aim for you to develop a rock-solid startline stay, regardless of the duration, distractions, or distance from you as the handler.
This solid stay will endure all the challenging situations, environments, or emotional states that agility competitions may bring.
This way you’ll be able to confidently focus on your part of the course, knowing that your dog has a dependable stay you can always rely on.
Before you know it, others will start approaching you, eager to discover the secret behind your freshly acquired agility success.
Your journey from frustration to triumph is right at your fingertips, and it all begins with a simple click…

Flawless stays during training sessions, only to face persistent challenges in replicating the same behavior during competitions.
Achieve consistent success in maintaining the desired behavior both in training sessions and during competitive events.
Being overwhelmed by your dog's high arousal issues at competitions, adding to the overall performance stress.

Facing disqualification and feeling discouraged because your dog consistently breaks the stay.

New to agility and want to set the perfect foundations? Or is your dog the one that’s just starting out? You’ve come to the right place.
You’ve got some agility experience but your dog doesn’t know how to stay at the startline. Not a problem – we hold the key!
Does your dog have a history of breaking their startline stay and risking disqualification? This is the way to take things to the next level!
You think the problem is your dog and you are not willing to put in the work to make change.
You don’t mind being disqualified or achieving worse results in competitions because your dog breaks the stay.
You believe your dog can’t be helped.

“Arousal will increase athletic performance up to a certain point (the optimum). However, once arousal levels exceed the optimum level for the task at hand, performance will decrease.”
“If the athlete suffers from over-arousal this can hinder their ability to concentrate, to be precise, and to problem solve.”
“If arousal levels are especially high they can even spark the fight, flight or freeze response where the individual becomes angry and aggressive, tries to run or hide from the stressor, or disassociates and stiffens.”
Chasing the Tale’s ideology is that dogs can be much more than just a pet if only we nurture their true potential with consistent, enjoyable, and clear training.
By ‘more than just a pet’ we mean that your dog can be your friend, your family member, your loyal companion, and more. We believe that dogs can make our everyday lives more fun and fulfilling with their happy attitude and contagious outlook on life.
Chasing the Tale is about creating stories with your dog and it is about adventure!
That being said, we should never forget what sparks the fire in our own dog’s! Always look at the dog in front of you and adapt your adventures to their specific needs and wants.
The goal is for everyone to enjoy themselves, together! The adventure need not be grand, as long as you make it your own – even if that means relaxing on the sofa and watching Netflix, going to a drive-in movie theatre, grabbing a coffee in the city or taking a refreshing swim in the lake.
All in all, the mission of Chasing the Tale is to encourage more dog owners to take their dogs with them on their adventures – and most importantly, show them how easy it can be with a well mannered dog! With all of this in mind, Chasing the Tale Academy was born.
